Orsini Family Period (1470- -1696)
In 1470, the Orsini family began construction of Bracciano Castle. At that time, the Orsini family was one of the most powerful families in central Italy, with branches spread across half of Europe. The castle's construction incorporated the most advanced architectural techniques and artistic styles of the time, becoming a symbol of the Orsini family's power and wealth.
Odescalchi Family Period (1696-Present)
In 1696, the Bracciano branch of the Orsini family died out, and the castle was sold to Livio Odescalchi. Livio was the nephew of Pope Innocent XI, a member of a Lombard noble family, and possessed the bloodline of Charlemagne.
After taking over the castle, the Odescalchi family carefully repaired and expanded it, using it as the family's permanent residence. Today, the castle is managed by Prince Paolo Odescalchi, a direct descendant of Livio Odescalchi, and is open to the public.
Historical Influence
Bracciano Castle was an important diplomatic center on the Italian historical stage, hosting French kings such as Charles VIII and Louis XII, as well as numerous popes, cardinals, and nobles. In 1494, the visit of French King Charles VIII to Bracciano Castle marked the beginning of the Italian Wars.
