Author:

This summer, citizens of Chongqing have a new place to see dinosaur fossils up close. On August 5th, a huge Triceratops skull was exhibited at the Huatang Tianshi Hot Spring Hotel in Bishan District. It is reported that this is the first time a private Chinese entrepreneur has introduced dinosaur exhibits from abroad for public exhibition. [News conference scene] A Triceratops is a quadrupedal dinosaur, 7-9 meters long as an adult, weighing up to 12 tons, exceeding the weight of the largest land animal today, the African elephant. At first glance, the Triceratops skull may remind one of a modern rhinoceros, because the Triceratops has horns on its head, somewhat similar to a rhinoceros. News Conference Scene
Triceratops was a quadrupedal dinosaur, 7-9 meters long as an adult, weighing up to 12 tons, exceeding the weight of the largest land animal today, the African elephant. At first glance, the Triceratops skull often reminds people of modern rhinoceroses, because Triceratops has horns on its head, somewhat similar to rhinoceroses. Triceratops is named for the three horns on its head: a short nasal horn and a pair of longer brow horns. The function of these horns has aroused great research interest. The traditional view is that they were weapons for herbivores to resist or actively attack predators, but recent research suggests that they were more likely used to attract mates or display their dominance in the population, similar to the horns of modern reindeer, goats, and stag beetles. In addition, the Triceratops skull also has a huge neck shield extending backward, covering the entire neck. This extension makes the skull greatly elongated, with the head length accounting for about one-third of the body length.
Leaders and Guests Attending the News Conference
"Triceratops possesses the largest skull of any land animal. After its death, the skull and postcranial skeleton easily disintegrate and lose their connection. Under long-term geological action, they are often separated, making it difficult to find complete skeletal fossils." Ouyang Hui, a dinosaur expert and director of the Chongqing Natural History Museum, who attended the news conference, explained the reasons why it is difficult to find complete Triceratops skeletal fossils.

The Triceratops skull collected and publicly displayed at the Huatang Tianshi Hot Spring Hotel has real bones in key parts such as the mandible, nasal horn, brow horns, and occipital bone. Other parts also have some bones. The entire skull, scientifically restored, presents the imposing and complete form of the Triceratops skull, which is highly ornamental and has certain scientific research value.
  Triceratops Skull
It is understood that this precious Triceratops skull exhibit originated in North America and was obtained by the Chongqing Tianshi Hot Spring Group through an overseas auction at great expense. It will be on long-term display at the Huatang Tianshi Hot Spring Hotel for the public to appreciate and learn about dinosaurs.
